Domestic Violence, Exploitation And Atrocities Against Single Women

Domestic Violence, Exploitation And Atrocities Against Single Women

“Single, but not Alone!”

The exploitation and atrocities - against single women increase manifold “mentally”, “physically” and “economically” (and all too often “sexually”) after becoming Single. Many times women aren’t able to oppose this due to fear or other reasons.

Even without a husband, “domestic violence” is a reality for many Single Women. Brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, mothers-in-law, sometimes fathers-in-law, daughters-in-law and even sons can inflict physical, mental and economic violence on Single Women living with them, and sometimes, male in-laws are also known for inflicting sexual violence! We all know so well, how the society looks upon “single women”. It considers them weak and pitiable, that they can be treated in “any old way” because single women would tolerate injustice and misbehaviour.

But it is not like that anymore for Single Women who are organized and aware! The women who are part of the Organization of Strong Women Alone are very self-sufficient, and have quadrupled their strength. Now they will not bear any sort of violence; they stand strong to oppose it.

One of the main reasons that things have changed for Single Women associated with the Organization, is that they are not alone. If a case of domestic violence, exploitation or other atrocity is reported at a meeting, the other Single Women send a small group of women to see what the ground level situation is. If necessary, they counsel the family members, help the woman to file a police case, or make arrangements to help the affected Single Woman move out of that living arrangement.

Atrocities and Exploitation inflicted on Single Women at the workplace, include less payment of wages, sometimes sexual exploitation by contractors and supervisors. In Rajasthan, “Witch Hunting” is still practiced, all-be-it to a lesser extent than before. But if a Single Woman denies a man sexual favours, or if a village man wants her inherited land, allegations of “she is a Witch” are still made, and simple/superstitious community people take note! This leads to social boycotts by other community people, name calling, punishment – and sometimes even leads to murder!

The leaders of the Single Women Organization give the victims of violence, exploitation and atrocities, the confidence they need to raise their voices against injustice. The Organization supports them, so that together they get justice, and the Single Women are able to go forward to live dignified lives in the society.
